University of California, Davis and EverLast® Induction Lighting
Set the Standards for Smart Lighting Initiatives
Jackson, MI– December 10, 2010 – The state of California has been a leader of the sustainability movement for more than a decade, with the University of California, Davis, being at the forefront. On November 22nd, UC Davis announced its commitment to a new Smart Lighting Initiative to slash the electricity used to illuminate its buildings and grounds by 60 percent or more by 2020.1 UC Davis began implementing Smart Lighting Initiatives with the help of the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) in 2007. The university was awarded the 2009 Best Practice Award for retrofitting 380 high-pressure sodium fixtures with EverLast® Induction Lighting's 100w bi-level garage fixtures in the north-entry parking structure, a retrofit that saves approximately $78,000 annually.
"UC Davis is uniquely able to serve as a model for virtually anyone who uses electric lights in California," said Michael Siminovitch, director of CLTC and a professor of design at UC Davis. "We are innovating lighting in our own campus residences, offices, classrooms, laboratories, human and animal medical centers, wineries and breweries, parks, greenbelts, barns, and parking lots."2
California Public Utilities Commission President Michael R. Peevey said UC Davis is the first institution to commit to achieving the lighting efficiency goals called for in the California Long-Term Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan. "Advanced lighting technologies represent a win-win for our economy and the environment. By changing to more efficient light fixtures, bulbs and sensors, Californians can reduce the amount of energy they use and save money while simultaneously advancing our efforts to address climate change," Peevey said.3
"While a number of other universities have been implementing energy-efficient lighting initiatives, none have committed to such an aggressive approach," stated Brandon Marken, Director of Commercial Sales. "However, we feel it's only a matter of time before the implementation of smart lighting programs on campuses becomes state mandated, and EverLast Induction Lighting offers a solution for virtually every application."
EverLast® Induction Lighting has been an affiliate member of CLTC since its inception in 2004. A number of innovative lighting solutions have been created through the partnership over the years, notably the BioLume™ Series, which is a patent-pending lighting collection of hybrid bi-level fixtures that utilize a 5000K induction lamp and amber LEDs, coupled with occupancy sensor controls. When an area is vacant, amber-colored LEDs emit biologically-friendly light, and when the sensor is triggered, an induction lamp turns on to provide bright white light for enhanced safety and security.
Following the success at UC Davis, EverLast® induction light fixtures have been installed at other University of California campuses, including Irvine, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco. Universities experiencing the financial and environmental benefits of EverLast® lighting products include: the University of Michigan, Bryan College, Stanford University, San Diego State University, Oakland University, and Purdue University.
